Primary & Secondary Education
Bloomington boasts top-notch, award-winning schools at the primary and secondary level. In Monroe County alone, there are 16 elementary schools, nine private schools, three middle schools and three high schools. Our teachers are highly trained, dedicated professionals committed to making sure your children receive the education they deserve and need to make valuable contributions to the community. Monroe County has two public school districts. Contact the appropriate district’s administrative office to enroll new students.

Richland-Bean Blossom Schools
The Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corp. includes a high school, junior high and three elementary schools. Enrollment is 2,752 grades K-12. It is overseen by a five-member school board, which meets the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the School Service Center.

Monroe County Community School Corporation

The Monroe County Community School Corp. serves 10,146 students, grades K-12. It operates two high schools and an alternative high school, three middle schools, and 14 elementary schools. Since 1965, the MCCSC has offered an adult education program offering a full-service and evening program serving over 1,000 students annually. It helps adult students improve reading, writing, math, speaking and thinking skills through a non-graded, customized and integrated learning approach. A seven-person school board oversees operations at MCCSC. The board holds regular meetings on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Administration Center, Printed agendas are available on the day of the meeting.

Bloomington has many programs dedicated to improving the educational experiences available for both youths and adults including:

• Community Alliance for Lifelong Learning (CALL) - integrates lifelong learning into our cultural framework. The city is committed to supporting efforts to expand education and training to all our children.

• Franklin Initiative - designed to help schools and businesses work together to help kids gain experience and skills they’ll need to make a smooth transition from school to work.

• Good Friends - mentoring program established by the IU Alumni Assoc. that focuses on improving reading skills in elementary age at-risk children.

• IU High School Outreach Program - encourages students to become involved in science through various activities and learning experiences.

• Monroe County Head Start Program - provides local children from low income families with social and educational skills training.

• Tech Prep - an innovative educational approach to providing students with academic and technical foundations for working in business, health, industry and applied science technologies.

• VITAL - program that trains and coordinates 300 volunteer tutors to provide one-on-one instruction in reading and writing for adult learners.

• Wonder Lab - community-based science museum that provides hands-on experiences for youth.

Adult Basic Education Programs, ranging from reading and basic life skills to GED preparation and English as a second language, are free. Vocational training, general interest courses and classes in the arts are offered by many area organizations. Bloomington has 20 youth mentoring programs and 22
church and youth groups including the Boys and Girls Club.
