 Bloomington and Monroe County have a thriving economy with a bright future. Most of the county's population is of working age (25-64).  The average annual earnings per job in Monroe County is $26,942.  In 2002, the Bloomington Economic Development Corporation helped generate nearly $60 million in new investment and 500 new jobs in Bloomington by helping businesses expand or locate in the area.  Bloomington has recently received recognition for its recent economic performance from Inc. Magazine, which ranked Bloomington number 19 on their list of Best Places for Business and from Forbes, which recognized Bloomington as the 10th Best Smaller Metro Area for Business and Careers.

The BEDC is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Monroe County by stimulating quality economic development. The BEDC seeks to accomplish its mission through entrepreneurial growth, marketing and new business attraction, retention and expansion of existing business, and product and university-led development.
